How to organize a pub quiz for your company outing yourself

You don't need an external agency or a professional quizmaster; with a ready-made quiz from the library your quiz night is set up in fifteen minutes. Here's how:

1. Arrange a space with a screen: the canteen with a TV, a meeting room with a projector or simply a laptop on the table.
2. Create a free account and pick a ready-made quiz from the library, or put together your own evening from individual rounds.
3. Appoint a colleague as quizmaster. They start the quiz and put the host screen with the join code and QR code on the big screen.
4. Colleagues scan the QR code with their phones, pick a name and join in right away: no app, no account.
5. Play the rounds one by one, from music to map questions, and finish with the final standings and the penalty wheel for the losers.

Count on fifteen minutes of preparation with a ready-made quiz. If you'd rather write your own questions you'll be busy a bit longer, but you don't have to.

Run of show: what the quiz night looks like

Every company outing is different, but this program almost always works. Count on one and a half to two hours for a full quiz night:

1. Doors open (15 min): put the host screen up on the TV or projector. Colleagues scan the QR code, pick a name and grab a drink.
2. Warming up (2 rounds, ~30 min): start with accessible rounds like multiple choice or word association so everyone finds the rhythm.
3. Break (15 min): argue about that one question nobody got, while the standings stay up on the screen.
4. Turning up the heat (2 rounds, ~30 min): time for the music round and the map round. This is where the gaps open up.
5. Finale (~20 min): one last round, the final standings and the penalty wheel for the losers. That last quarter hour is what everyone remembers.

Short on time? Three rounds without a break fits in about an hour. As quizmaster you set the pace per question, so adjusting when drinks run long takes no effort.

Which rounds work well at a company outing?

The library mixes nine round types. This combination almost always lands at a team outing:

• Music round: guess intros and fragments. The room wakes up the moment the first singalong hit comes on.
• Estimation questions: nobody knows the exact answer, so everyone has a shot, including the colleague without ready trivia knowledge.
• Map round: pin where something is or where it happened. Surprisingly competitive, especially once the distance in kilometers appears on screen.
• Tile board: a board full of tiles around one topic, where you take turns picking a tile that fits the criterion. Guess wrong and you're out.
• Your own questions (Ultimate): questions about colleagues, inside jokes or company history make the night personal. Mix them with ready-made rounds as you like.

Tips from quiz nights that worked

• Prefer teams? Let pairs share one phone: scoring is per phone, and a duo debates at least as fiercely.
• Alternate knowledge rounds with estimation and guessing rounds so it stays exciting for colleagues without a trivia memory.
