Mixing your own rounds with the Kwishetwel catalog

Two ways to mix them

Mixing is not a separate feature you enable. Your own rounds and ours sit side by side, and you pick from both. There are two moments to do that:

• During the night, round by round. You start a game and pick the next round after each one. Nothing to build in advance.
• Up front, locked into a quiz. You put the rounds in the order you want, with a cutscene in between if you like, and play the whole thing as one continuous quiz.

Way 1: during the night, round by round

The fastest route, and the reason a mixed night needs no preparation at all. You create a game, your players join, and then you pick what to play.

That picker has two tabs: Kwissen (the Dutch word stayed) and Standalone rounds. Under both, your own work leads the tile list, under the heading Your rounds or Your quizzes, with From the catalog below it. A featured tile can sit above all of that; that is a recommendation and may well be one of ours. Once there are enough items on both sides, the Filter menu holds a Source group with Yours and From Kwishetwel.

After every round you land back in that screen and pick the next one. So you can alternate as often as you like: one of your own rounds about the group, then a music round from us, then something of yours again. The standings simply carry across every round of the night.

Way 2: lock the order into a quiz

If you would rather not be picking halfway through the night, or you want to play the same quiz more than once, put the rounds together in one quiz:

1. In the sidebar, go to Settings and click Quizzes under Content.
2. Click New quiz.
3. Fill in Title and Subject, and pick a theme under the Settings tab. Without a theme, saving is blocked with the message Choose a theme.
4. Go to the Rounds tab and click Add round under Order.
5. In the dialog that opens, your own rounds come first under Your rounds, with From the catalog below. Click the plus button next to every round you want. An added round gets a check mark. Feel free to search by title; the search box covers both sections at once.
6. Drag the handle on the left of a round to change the order. Use Add cutscene to slot in a break or announcement screen.
7. Click Publish when the quiz is done, or Save draft if you want to continue later.

The dialog says as much itself, above the list: Your own rounds come first, followed by the Kwishetwel catalog. Only published rounds can be picked; an added round lands at the bottom of the order list. If you have both your own rounds and catalog rounds, three buttons appear at the top as well: All, Yours and From Kwishetwel. With no rounds of your own they are not there, because there would be nothing to filter.

A published quiz then shows up in your game picker under Kwissen, in Your quizzes.

Round missing from the list?

It is almost always one of these three.

The round is still a draft

By far the most common one. In a quiz's Add round dialog your own round does not disappear, but sits there greyed out with the reason Not published yet and an Open button. In the picker during a game a draft round drops out entirely, with no explanation; there too this is usually the cause.

The fix is the same either way: go to Settings, Rounds, open the round and click Publish. After that it can be picked. On a round that is already published, those same buttons read To draft and Save changes; if you see those, you are done.

The language is set differently

A quiz is single-language: every round in it must share that language. If the language under the Settings tab is set to Dutch, English catalog rounds drop out of the list entirely, and your own round shows the reason next to it. Set the quiz language to the language of your rounds.

The same goes for the picker during a game, where it is harder to spot: that screen only shows content in the language you are using the app in. Play the app in Dutch and your English rounds will not be listed there. Switch the app back, or build the round in the language you play in.

You have no rounds of your own yet

If there is no Your rounds heading and no source buttons at all, you have nothing of your own ready. Create one first via Settings, Rounds, New round.

Two more things that matter: the same round can only appear once in the same quiz, and a draft round that does sit in a saved quiz will not play. You will see that in your quiz list as a warning that some of the rounds are not published, with a Publish all rounds action that fixes it in one go after a confirmation. Rounds that are not yours are skipped.

Good to know

• The lock sits per question, not per round. A mixed quiz plays the questions covered by your plan; anything above it is skipped. The quiz builder shows you under Per subscription what each plan is left with, so it will not surprise you mid evening.
• Publishing is not the same as sharing.It only means the round is ready to play and to pick. Your own rounds and quizzes stay yours; they do not end up in other customers' catalogs.
• Media is uploaded. An image, audio clip or cover goes in as a file; a link to an external URL is refused.
• If Ultimate lapses, your own rounds and quizzes stay put. They are not playable until you activate Ultimate again.

Why mixing works well

Writing a whole night yourself takes a couple of hours; playing a night entirely from the catalog misses the one thing your particular group will laugh at. The combination solves that: one or two of your own rounds about the friend group, the club or the team, wrapped in ready-made rounds that hold the level and the pace. You end up writing ten questions instead of fifty.
